A core value of the Oneness-Family School philosophy is commitment to the personal growth of each student. We need to prepare our young people to be citizens of a truly global society in the twenty-first century.
The school's curriculum embraces character building and multicultural understanding as an integral part of the program. These values are also supported by special events and festivals such as United Nations Day, the Festival of Lights, the Harmony Peace Run and others.
Why aren't more schools focusing on these concepts and learning more about cultural differences or the meaning of the United Nations? It is because schools are so pressured to keep test scores high that there is little room or time for curriculum ideas that build character, spiritual principles, or multi-cultural understanding. Our national educational system is heavily focused on test results and as a result, I fear we have forsaken all those aspects of personal growth that are not so easily measured: emotional health, social responsibility, ethics and global awareness. If a child does well on his/her standardized test, that does not automatically imply he/she will be a successful or a happy individual.
Our job as educators and parents is much broader and deeper than simply preparing a student to pass tests. We must prepare individuals to meet life's true challenges. Our students not only learn academics, but also conflict resolution techniques, creative problem-solving strategies, social communication skills, collaboration, and mind-body health awareness. It is this holistic approach to learning and the educational environment that we create at the school that differentiates the Oneness-Family School experience from others.
