Our Community
The Oneness-Family School community is as vibrant as it is diverse. It is knit together by the fabric of our vision, which aims to foster a new generation of leaders who understand and appreciate the world as one family. We want our students to become self confident and self-aware adults. We wish to instill in them a lifelong love of learning and empower them with a lasting ability to learn. We seek to foster in them a strong character rooted in the virtues of integrity, courage, and compassion.
The vehicle for achieving our mission is our holistic, integrated curriculum implemented in an inspiring learning environment. Through our curriculum we develop all facets of student growth – from cognitive or academic skills to emotional/social development and from artistic expression to civic responsibility. Essential ingredients in our educational program include physical fitness and sports, science and environmental studies, foreign languages and multicultural knowledge, conflict resolution and collaboration skills, and world religions.
Rather than create a competitive atmosphere where students compare themselves with each other and measure their success relative to each other, at Oneness-Family School, we motivate students through the concept of self-transcendence. Self-transcendence means that each of us – students and adults alike – is striving to broaden our horizons of our knowledge and deepen the wells of our character. We believe in continual self-improvement based on the conviction that the betterment of ourselves as individuals will further the progress of society as a whole.
At Oneness-Family School, the partnership between home and school is integral to our success. We believe that this is the best recipe for helping our students make the fastest progress. It also is the best way to ensure that they develop an evolved and grounded personality that will be able to withstand the buffering winds of adolescence and the pressures of young adulthood.
At Oneness-Family School, we believe that learning extends far beyond the four walls of the classroom. Whether it’s a visit to the nature center, the firehouse, the museum, the theatre, or the local park, we want our students to be as much’s as possible outdoors, exploring their community and making use of the vast cultural resources of the Washington Dc area. In addition, the school grants Global Outreach and Community Service a central place of importance in the School’s program. Our students learn to “expand their hearts of compassion” by visiting senior citizens, soup kitchens, cleaning park, recycling, conserving energy and participating in ongoing global outreach projects.
While we place a strong emphasis on civics and ethics at the School, we do not espouse political parties or support individual political candidates. We believe that the best way to prepare students for a life of engaged citizenship and social responsibility is to foster in them an open mind critical thinking skills, and the ability to view an issue from a multiplicity of perspectives. We encourage our students to pay attention to current events and to become knowledgeable about the political process – so ultimately they will realize the positive difference their engagement makes in society.
At Oneness-Family School, we believe that philanthropy can take many forms. We celebrate the abundance that result from our common vision, our unity of purpose and our collective good will. Giving can take many forms including volunteer service to the School, financial contributions to our Annual Fund, in kind donations and serving as a conduit to individuals or resources that can benefit the School. We do not elevate one kind of giving above other, rather we embrace the blessing we receive, large and small, in whatever form and from whatever direction they may come.
Over our first twenty years, we’ve not just built a school we have lived a philosophy. Nurtured a sanctuary of peace where children feel safe and successful. We’ve also created an educational environment that challenges students to reach their highest potential and to become lead in the world.
